Individual course

Base metals belong to the most important materials used in different chemical plants and equipment. This course aims to introduce basic concepts needed to understand corrosion resistance and different methods to avoid corrosion in aqueous solutions.

Different corrosion types, passivation, polarisation and corrosion protection via material choice, design, anodic and cathodic protection, inorganic and organic coatings are discussed. Examples of corrosion case studies demonstrate further the subject.

After the course, the student:

  • can analyse and discuss potential factors which might have caused the observed corrosion case and also suggests possible solutions to avoid corrosion.
  • understands the typical corrosion metal of the most important metals in various environments.
  • understands corrosion mechanisms.
  • understands basic thermodynamic concepts and kinetics of corrosion reactions.
