Digital water

Individual course

This course introduces you opportunities of digitalization for the water sector and addresses some basic digital solutions on a fundamental terminology level. We touch upon the concepts of artificial intelligence, machine learning, Earth Observation, databases, data assimilation and augmented reality through practical examples and from the perspective of a process, environmental or chemical engineer not yet deeply familiar with the topics.

The course is compiled of reading material, commercial videos and webinars and pod-casts with experts to bring you an entry-level introduction and encourage you to enter the domain of computer science and software engineering.

The course is a 2 ECTS introductory course for those possessing domain specific knowledge and skills from the water sector. The total estimated workload is 54 hours. The course is a self-standing course, which you can take to touch upon the opportunities of digitalization for the water sector. It is completed by studying the course material and passing a Moodle exam, contributing to discussion forums (3 forums, minimum 5 contributions per forum) and submitting a 2-page learning diary for grading. All tasks are available throughout the year.

The prerequisite for the course is that you already possess knowledge and understanding of the water sector and the nature of processes and operations within the water sector. The course is meant for FITech ICT students but may be included in the degrees of chemical engineering as elective studies, too.

The course is completed fully online in LUT Moodle where you have access to the study material, the exam and the assignments required to pass the course. You can register for this course anytime, and after that you can complete the course on your own pace.
