Sheet metal forming

Individual course

The course is mandatory in order to take other courses in the module.

Several sheet metal forming processes including tool and die design is examined during course. The theory of plasticity is combined to the forming processes. How to determine material properties and how they affect to the selection of forming processes and materials are discussed in the course. A very important subject during the course is the stress-strain behaviour of materials. Metal forming simulation tools are used to optimise the tools and dies (Abaqus or LS-Dyna).

The object of the course is to give readiness for students to predict suitable/possible manufacturing methods for selected components and/or parts. Student will have also knowledge of costs and throughput times for different manufacturing methods. Comparison between forming and machining methods is examined during course and students understand the effect of serie size to the selection of suitable manufacturing method. In addition, after the course it is possible to estimate the benefits of forming simulations during production optimisation.
