Corrosion and wear of materials
Yksittäinen kurssi
If you are taking this course as part of a FITech minor, please note that all minors will be offered for the last time in the academic year 2021-2022. Please check the individual courses for updates regarding future availability.
The course contains background for understanding various degradation processes having influences on materials performance, e.g. chemical and mechanical degradation mechanisms including corrosion and wear. The theoretical and practical mechanisms influencing the performance of all types of materials such as metals and alloys, polymers and composites, and ceramics are also included. The course contains also different protection and measurement methods to ensure materials performance and materials selection procedures with practical examples.
Based on relevant theories, the student will learn to evaluate if corrosion, wear or other types of materials degradation can occur under specific operating conditions in a given equipment or construction. In cases where such degradation can occur, the student will be able to determine the probable degradation type, estimate the rate of degradation and propose the most reasonable materials or protection method as regards safety, price and environmental considerations. The student will be able to propose the correct materials, design and operation conditions to reduce the likelihood of degradation in new equipment and constructions. The student will also be able to propose necessary laboratory and field tests and take part in research programs to solve specific materials problems. In addition, the student will be able to perform troubleshooting, and select degradation monitoring methods.
