Frequently asked questions

  • Yes, you can take any course free of charge.
  • The Ministry of Education and Culture grants our funding and it is based on the study credits of the students.

 

  • If you are unemployed and plan to apply for unemployment benefits, please first contact the TE Services to discuss about your options for studying and the conditions.
  • You can find all your study rights in the My Studyinfo service and all course information can be found on the Courses page.
  • If you plan to apply for the adult education allowance, please contact the granting authority to discuss about your options for studying and the conditions.
  • FITech courses are in principle covered by the adult education allowance, but decisions regarding the allowance are made by the granting authority (Employment Fund).
  • You can find all your study rights in the My Studyinfo service and all course information can be found on the Courses page.
  • NB! If you are studying some of our MOOC courses (Massive Open Online Course), please note that these courses are open online for everyone and the participants do NOT automatically have a study right at any university. We do not require you to gain ECTS credits for the course but you can apply for the credits after completing the course. At that point, your personal information is registered in the study register of the university organising the MOOC and you will be granted a study right.
  • If you are asked to provide proof of the studies, please contact the university contact person directly or info(at)fitech.io.
  • If the amount of students for the course is limited, you can find this information on the course page and the applications are accepted in chronological order. Otherwise you can join the course when you accept the study place.
  • If either degree students or adult learners are given priority, it is mentioned in the course information. Some courses are available only for adult learners. Adult learners are prioritised due to funding.
  • You need to familiarise yourself with the possible prerequisites of the course and evaluate whether the course is suitable for you or not.
  • If some additional documents are required for the application, it is mentioned on the course information.
  • Many courses are organised online where attendance is not required on campus. However, see the course information to check whether there are some parts of the course that are time bound, for example lectures or course exercises.
  • Some courses are blended teaching which means that the course is organised partially online but it requires some attendance on campus. More detailed information is offered on the course information.
  • Studies can also be contact teaching which means that you have to be present at the university campus.
  • The universities organise their courses on their own study platforms and the study practicalities vary between universities. If you are taking courses from several universities, you need to activate the user accounts and follow the emails from each university.
  • The estimated workload for 1 ECTS credit is 27 hours.
  • For example, a 5 ECTS course means about 135 hours of studying. That includes possible contact lessons and self study.
  • Please, only apply for the courses that you can complete.

Applying for FITech courses

  • FITech courses have three application periods during a year for courses starting in spring, summer or autumn.
  • You can find the course-specific deadlines on each course page.
  • Our study offering includes continuously ongoing courses that have an ongoing application period.
  • FITech studies are targeted for Finnish citizens and people permanently living in Finland.
  • More specifically the target groups are due to funding adult learners (graduates and company representatives) and degree students studying in any Higher Education Institution in Finland. The majority of the courses are available for all applicants, but some courses are only open for adult learners.
  • Degree student: if the course is organised by your home university, enroll in your own university’s system.
  • On the Courses page, you can filter courses by student type to find the right course selection for you.
  • Check also the course specific prerequisites to assess if the course contents are suitable for you.
  • You need to have a Finnish personal identity code in order to apply and use strong e-identification (using e.g. online banking codes with electronic identification activated) to confirm your study place.
  • You are a degree student if you are currently studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a Finnish university or university of applied sciences. You are counted as a degree student also if you’ve enrolled as absent. If you are studying at the Open university, you are not a degree student.
  • You are an adult learner if you are not currently studying for a degree in a Finnish university or university of applied sciences.
  • If you are a doctoral student in a university, apply as an adult learner.
  • Choose the application form that suites your situation when you are applying.
  • If the course is for degree students, you can apply, considering you meet the prerequisite criteria.
  • If the course is only for adult learners, then unfortunately you cannot apply.
  • The courses arranged through FITech are available for all Finns and people permanently living in Finland. Unfortunately we can’t offer FITech studies free of charge for foreigners who don’t have a Finnish personal identity code due to funding-related reasons.
  • You need to have a Finnish personal identity code and e-identification (e.g. online banking codes with electronic identification activated) in order to apply and verify your identity.
  • The process has three phases: (1) applying for the study right from the university and (2) when your application is processed you need to accept the study place and (3) then enrolling for the courses following the university’s directions.
  • You can find a Start here link on each course page that will take you to more detailed instructions.
  • There are two application forms: one for degree students and another for adult learners. Choose the application form that suites to your situation when you are applying.
  • Once your application has been accepted, you will get instructions on how to confirm your study place at My Studyinfo. You have seven days to accept the study place.
  • You will receive instructions from the university on how to activate your IT-credentials and sign up for the courses. The instructions are usually sent closer to the start of the course.
  • For degree students: if the FITech course is organised by your home university, sign up for the courses in your university’s system.
  • There is no limit of how many courses you can apply to, but please only apply to courses that you plan to complete.
  • One (1) ECTS corresponds to around 27 hours of work. Please also note other course arrangements (possible scheduled lectures, exercises, etc.).
  • Check that the application period is open for that particular course.
  • Check also that the course is available to you. Some of the courses are only for degree students and some only for adult learners.
  • Please, read any possible additional instructions attached to the course information on the course page.
  • In most cases, the applications are handled after the course’s application deadline (you can find the DL on the course page). If the course is continuously on-going, the applications are handled also continuously. This may take a couple of days to a week after you have submitted you application.
  • Please check the schedule for registration of credits of MOOC courses separately for each course from the course platform.
  • You will receive an automatic message when you have submitted your application. Please, read the information on the message very carefully. If you haven’t received any automatic message, remember to check the spam folder in your email.

  • If there is a maximum amount of FITech students to the course the applications are processed in a chronological order.

  • You don’t need to apply or sign up for a MOOC course. You can just start the course by clicking the link on the course page (Start here > Go to the course platform). Read more about our MOOCs.
  • You can complete the course without registration. However, if you want to have the credits registered to the study register of the university organising the MOOC course, you need to create an account on the course platform and submit an application through Studyinfo. You will get instructions for this at the end of the course.
  • Please notice that you need to have a Finnish personal identity code and online banking access code to get the credits registered.

Accepting study place for FITech courses

  • When your application is accepted you will get an automatic email with a link to accept the place.
  • You have seven days to accept the study place.
  • You can login to My Studyinfo and view your applications and accept a study place.
  • Yes, you can. Take some time to plan your studies and time management so that you are able to complete the courses you have started.
  • Please note that if the courses are organised by different universities, you will receive separate IT credentials to all of them.
  • Please note that if you want to accept multiple study places at the same time then you need to do this one by one. I.e. you need to save each acceptance separately.
  • You need to have a Finnish personal identity code in order to submit an application and Finnish e-identification in order to confirm your study place.
  • If you have a Finnish personal identity code but no e-identification (e.g. online banking codes), please contact the university.
  • Please, be sure to accept the study place on time since that is the only way to guarantee that you can participate in the course.
  • If you missed the deadline, contact either FITech team (info(at)fitech.io) or the university that organises the course. Do not send another application for the same course.
  • No. The only one offer of admission per academic term rule applies only for degree studies.
  • You can accept a study place for a FITech course and this doesn’t affect if you want to apply for degree studies.
  • No. The first-time rule applies only for degree studies.
  • You do not accept a study place for degree studies when accepting a study place for individual courses at FITech. Therefore, you don’t lose your status as a first-time applicant.

Studying on a FITech course

1. Activate your user account.

  • You will get an email from the university to activate your account. You need Finnish online banking codes or other strong e-identification in order to activate the user account.

2. Enroll to the course in the university’s system

  • Universities send the instructions for studying either to your personal email or the university email. Read the university email regularly or forward the messages to your own email account.
  • Please note that some universities will enroll you to the course, please wait for the email from the university.
  • If you haven’t received the instructions a week before the course start, please contact info(at)fitech.io. Please also check your spam.

Applications for continuously on-going courses are processed weekly and study rights are created regularly. Please note that the instructions are usually sent within one week after you have confirmed the study place.

3. Login to the course platform.

  • You can login to the course platform after you have been enrolled to the course.
  • Please note that the universities use different course platforms.
  • Once your study right has been registered, you will get instructions from the university on how to activate your user account (please also check your spam).
  • You need Finnish online banking codes or other strong e-identification in order to activate the user account.
  • If you already have a user account to the university, you can change your password. You will get instructions for this from the universities.
  • Please note that because FITech is a network university and all host universities organise the courses themselves, you will get different user account’s for every university.
  • Universities send the instructions for studying either to your personal email or the university email (please also check spam).
  • If you cannot find the email with the instructions, please contact the university or info@fitech.io.
  • Please contact the teaching staff and let them know your problem.
  • You can also contact the university administration or info@fitech.io.
  • If you need more time to complete the course or you need to do some parts again, please consult the teacher.
  • Please note that accepting the study place is binding. If your situation has changed, you can cancel your participation.
  • If you haven’t confirmed your study place at My Studyinfo, you don’t have to do anything.
  • If you have confirmed your study place, send an email to info(at)fitech.io and tell which course you want to cancel.

After the course

  • Adult learners can get a transcript of records from all FITech-courses (ask from the university) and a digital badge of the courses that have a link to the badge application instructions. The badges can be shared in several social media platforms, e.g. in LinkedIn. Read more about the digital badges.
  • Degree students can also order a transcript of records from the student office of the university organising the course. Unfortunately degree student cannot apply for a digital badge.
  • Study credits (ECTS) are registered in the study register of the universities. You can also download the transcript of records independently from the university’s system according to their instructions.
  • Please note that it might take time for the the teachers to evaluate the course after you have completed it. Usually, the course is graded four weeks after its completion the latest.
  • Yes, adult learners can get a digital badge after completing the course and the credits have been registered in the study register of the university organising the course.
  • You will get instructions for applying the credits on the MOOC course platform after the course.
  • Please notice that you need to have a Finnish personal identity code and online banking access code to get the credits registered.
  • Unfortunately degree student cannot apply for a digital badge.
  • Yes, you can transfer your FITech credits to your own degree. The credits are not transferred automatically so it is up to the student to do it.
  • Please, start with reading your home university’s instructions for transferring the credits.
  • Degree students can transfer the credits by providing the transcript of records to their home university. You can order a transcript of records from the student office of the university organising the course.
  • Remember to include the FITech studies in your personal study plan (HOPS) before you apply. If you are unsure if the studies are suitable for your degree, please discuss with your home university’s student services.
  • If you took a whole minor at FITech, transfer first all credits to your home university and then apply for the registration of the minor in your home university.
