Digital management

During this module of digital management you will learn how to manage the information systems portfolio in a company and how to analyse and develop IT governance and processes. You will also learn how to analyse, design, plan and implement the strategy of the company with enterprise architectures, for example transaction processing systems and decision support systems. The courses offer methods and techniques to design, build and control project portfolios.

As a part of this study module, you will decide whether to focus on designing services based on data, information and human expertise streams or to focus more on the business development side via building industrial product-service offerings and service blueprinting, pricing and delivery.

In the module, there are three (3) compulsory courses:

  • Management of ICT function (TITE3270), 5 ECTS
  • Enterprise architectures (TITE2230), 5 ECTS
  • Project portfolio management (ISAN3040), 5 ECTS

Additionally, you can choose one of these service related courses:

  • Service design (ISAN3050), 5 ECTS
  • Service business development (JOHT3062), 5 ECTS

NB! Some courses have limits on the amount of FITech students. Persons without a valid study right to a Finnish university have preference to those courses if not mentioned otherwise.

This course focuses on the connection between information and communication technology (ICT) and its utilisation for better business functionality.

The business dependence on ICT is clear, and thus understanding the needs and connecting them with the available technological options is no more voluntary. Many concepts would fit under this concept, for instance: enterprise resource planning (ERP), enterprise architecture (EA), information technology (IT) infrastructure, management, business applications, and many others.

After the course, the student recognises different ICT services and has the knowledge and techniques required to utilise them efficiently to serve the business model. The student understands about concepts of IT governance, information system planning, digital transformation strategies, information officer role and IT integration procedures.

Many modules will be given to cover these topics throughout the course. On the practical side, selective business cases and interactive sessions are given to promote the student’s analysis skills and to make sure they fully understand and adopt the given management practices.

Prerequisites: Students are expected to be familiar with the basics of project management and strategic management.

This course teaches the students project portfolio management from multiple points of view. Students learn what is a portfolio, a program and a project.

For example the following topics are part of the course:

  • project portfolio management process
  • project evaluation methods (quantitative and qualitative)
  • risk management approaches
  • role of PMO in portfolio management.

Student has a holistic understanding of project portfolio management after the course.

After completing the course, the students

  • will understand what are project portfolios and their role in today’s industry
  • will learn how project portfolio management creates value for the company
  • will learn practical methods and techniques to design, build and control project portfolios
  • will also learn approaches to handle uncertainty and risks as unavoidable elements in project portfolio management.

Course develops critical and analytical thinking as well as organisational operation skills.

On this course, the students will learn design services in practice and several aspects are covered on the course. Content of this course relates to basics of service design, service design business models, information technologies in services, digital platforms, user-driven service innovations, design thinking and servitisation. Students will build a new service from scratch in the course utilising pre-defined online process.

After completing the course, the students will understand how to design services based on data, information and human expertise streams. The students will learn principles, processes and tools to design services for customers. Course develops organisational operations as well as critical and analytical thinking.

Students must complete a pre-assigment before the lectures.

The course covers the core areas of service business development i.e., building industrial product-service offerings, service blueprinting, service pricing and delivery as well as engaging users into the development of new services.

After the course the student will

  1. have an in-depth understanding on the core areas of service business with a special focus on the service development
  2. be able to apply the knowledge by identifying, analysing and solving a real-life business problem

The course will also improve vital work-life skills such as team-working, project management and presentation skills.

After the course, the student

  • understands the purpose and structure of enterprise architecture (EA).
  • understands how to analyse, design, plan and implement the strategy of the firm with EAs.
  • understands how IT/IS solutions support the strategy of an enterprise.
  • understands the principles and practices to put forward business, information, process, and technology changes needed to execute the strategy.
  • understands standards of enterprise architectures.
  • is able to describe the different types of information systems needed in an organisation (e.g., transaction processing systems, decision support systems).

With this knowledge the student is able to use and apply the software tools and practices in the way that they are able to model an enterprise architecture.
