Nanomaterials in energy technology

Yksittäinen kurssi

The course will focus on state-of-the-art nanostructured materials for sustainable energy production/storage applications such as solar cells, water splitting, batteries, supercapacitors, and hydrogen storage.

Course contents

The focus of the course is to give insight into the state-of-the-art nanostructured materials used for various energy production/storage applications (including photovoltaic cells, water splitting, batteries, supercapacitors, and hydrogen storage). Different synthesis and modification techniques of the nanomaterials as well as the most important characterisation techniques will be discussed. The relationships between the design of nanomaterials and the various energy applications will be established based on physicochemical principles. The course also touches on some of the UN’s goals for sustainable development (including renewable energy technologies and combating climate change).

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to

  • describe the most basic principles of the different energy technologies introduced during the course.
  • understand the most general concepts of the synthesis and utilisation of nanomaterials in various energy technologies.

Teaching schedule

Lectures on Tuesdays at 10.00–11.30 (online). Lectures are voluntary and there will be recordings available.

Completion methods

The course includes lectures and project works. The course can be completed remotely. Written exam. Course materials are distributed in Moodle.
