Water supply and sanitation is a key element in the development of urban societies in all parts of the world. During this ”Water and Society – Virtual course on sustainable water supply in long-term perspectives” (WASO) we will focus on long-term development on water supply systems (WSS). The goal is to learn the role of WSS in development of societies. We look at multi- and interdisciplinary way to history of WSS systems in different cultures in a distant past and now.
Course contents
Six one-week sections:
- Dipping into water
- Essence of water
- Urbanisation and Water supply & sanitation
- What constitutes good drinking water and a good source?
- Human interactions with water in pre-colonial Africa
- Summing up and way forward
Learning outcomes
After the course, the students can
- describe and report the role of water supply and sanitation (WSS) in development of societies
- describe the WSS and the effect off human activities on WSS in different cultures in a distant past, now and in the future
- name key development trends and development paths of the WSS
- describe the water use in societies
- report personal water use
- find reliable and relevant information sources concerning WSS
- write an essay about WSS using multi- and interdisciplinary methods.
Course material
All material is distributed on the Moodle platform.
Teaching schedule
- Each of the six course sections include a variable number of small assignments.
- A new section will start on Monday morning, at the latest, and all assignments are to be completed no later than 23.59 hours local time on Sunday.
- Note that you have to do all assignments and tasks to pass this course.
Completion methods
- Weekly assignments and tasks.
- An Essay (8-12 pages) on a subject from a given list.
