Unlock the power of understanding communication networks performance by measurements and analysis. Dive into the world of Internet and mobile networks, where you’ll learn to accurately measure and analyse their performance using a variety of statistical and mathematical methods. This comprehensive course not only covers the technical aspects but also addresses important legal considerations, equipping you with a holistic understanding.
Each week, you’ll tackle assignments that enhance your skills, gradually building a versatile toolbox that empowers you to perform insightful performance evaluations and characterise network behavior with precision. The course culminates in an exciting final assignment, where you’ll integrate all your knowledge from initial measurements to nuanced conclusions.
Course contents
- Introduction why measurements are important
- IP network measurements
- Data analysis and sampling
- Probability models and stochastics processes in measurements
- Practical and legal aspects of measurements
Learning outcomes
After the course the students will
- be equipped to measure and analyse the properties of network traffic and communication networks and draw insightful conclusions
- have the skills to apply and evaluate a variety of statistical methods for processing, analysing, and presenting measurement data effectively
- be able to design and implement advanced measurement plans collaboratively within a group setting
- gain an understanding of the critical technical and legal considerations associated with network measurements and become familiar with a range of methods and software tools relevant to the field.
Course material
Lecture notes and slide handouts. Support resources available freely in the internet. Students are assumed to have a basic understanding of programming (e.g. python) and Linux operating system command line usage.
Teaching schedule
- Lectures on Tuesdays at 14-16 (hybrid, recordings)
- Weekly exercise session on Thursdays at 8-12
- Weekly assignment deadline on Wednesdays
- Final assignment deadline in April
Lectures and weekly exercise sessions are hybrid. Two assignments are recommended to be performed at Otaniemi campus area: will require being one (1) about 3-hour session within two week window at campus. Fully remote option is possible but requires planning with the responsible teacher in advance.
Completion methods
