  • Other application layer protocols (HTTP, FTP, SMTP, etc.)
  • Differences of TCP and UDP
  • Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN) and Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
  • Network simulator GNS3
  • Usage of a protocol analyzer (Wireshark)

Learning outcomes

After the course, student knows how to do simple Ethernet and IP configurations, can do basic performance measurements, and is able to utilize a protocol analyzer to explore and debug the operation of protocols used commonly in today’s Internet.

Course material and technology

This laboratory course is supported by the theory course Computer Networking I, which is arranged in parallel. The laboratory course can also be completed independently by using the materials of the theory course (available on the Moodle platform), but in that case the required amount of self-study might increase depending on the previous knowledge of the student. Links to additional sample materials are provided on the course Moodle page. Lecture and other recordings as well as other materials like lecture notes, example problems etc available on the course platform.

To complete the course remotely, students need to install freely available software: e.g. network simulator GNS3, protocol analyzer Wireshark and an OpenVPN client.

Teaching

The course will primarily be based on flexible self-studying. It is also possible to complete the practical exercises in on-campus teaching at Tampere University Hervanta campus during the Fall and Spring periods. The course contains scheduled lectures and/or other learning events.

Completion methods
