5G technologies and services for business and entrepreneurs

Individual course

Max amount of FITech students: 35 adult learners

Come to learn basic concepts and terms used for analysis of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial finance and identify new entrepreneurial business ideas enabled by 5G technologies.

Course contents

The content of this course is divided into four different units, whose contents are expanded as follows:

• Unit 1: 5G mobile technologies, from 1G to 5G; Mobile (4G/LTE & 5G/NR) vs. wireless (Wi[1]Fi) radio access technologies; Mobile network architecture; 5G standardisation; 5G technology enablers; machine-type communications and narrow-band IoT and non-terrestrial networks (space and aerial).

• Unit 2: Human-centred design, prototyping and piloting; Human-centred design, prototyping and piloting of 5G products and mobile services; Exploration and analysis of user needs and customer requirements for specifying and prioritising product features and service characteristics; Elaboration on the development of prototypes for real-life evaluation and piloting with anticipated users and customers in living lab surroundings.

• Unit 3: Introduction to entrepreneurship; Role of 5G in the development of Sub-Saharan Africa (education, business, agriculture, etc.); Digitalised vs conventional entrepreneurship; Connections between globalisation; International competition; International trade & development cooperation and entrepreneurial ideas that 5G can unlock in Global South.

• Unit 4: Business models, commercialisation, finance; Business models, commercialisation, finance; Entrepreneurial ideas from Global South; Tactics for different types of pitches; Business model canvas (including business finance); Sources of financing entrepreneurial ventures (long-term financing, capital structure, common stock, different types of debt) and bankability & financing for start-ups (definition, risks).

Learning outcomes

After the course you can

  • recognise the key technological components of 5G, with emphasis on radio access & core network part of its architecture
  • define and explain the basic concepts and terms used for analysis of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial finance
  • identify new entrepreneurial business ideas enabled by 5G technologies, iteratively improving them by soliciting feedback and evaluating their market viability
  • consider customer and user-centered development of emerging services with 5G technology
  • plan, prepare, execute, document, and evaluate agile pilot testing based on new entrepreneurial business ideas enabled by 5G.

Teaching schedule

  • Lectures on Mondays and Wednesdays 16-18.
  • Group work Fridays 10-12.
