Electrical energy storage systems theory
Individual course
Max amount of FITech students: 30
Persons without a valid study right at a Finnish university or university of applied sciences have preference to this course.
During this course, we take a broader look at the interphases of electrical networks and electrical energy storages.
Course contents
This course presents an overview of energy storage and conversion technologies. Since different energy storage technologies have different features (e.g., capacity, energy density, power density, efficiency, charging cycles), selecting a proper technology for a given application is studied by means of analysis and case examples. The course focuses on developing the system level understanding of energy storage and related grid interfaces. After the course, the students can design simple energy storage system.
Learning outcomes
- Describe operating principles of key energy storage technologies, including their benefits and fundamental limitations.
- Select relevant technologies for energy storage, including storage and conversion components.
- Design an energy storage interface for a power system or a power train.
Course material
All the material will be provided on the course platform. No specific software used.
Teaching schedule
The course is fully online and one can study self-paced (within the course timetable). Flexible timetable within the course period.
Completion methods
Video modules and independent assignments.
