Introduction to cyber-physical systems

Individual course

This course is an introduction to IoT-based systems.

Course contents

  • Introduction to CPSs
  • Core concepts: system, uncertainty, information, network, decision-making and action
  • The three-layers of CPSs
  • Enabling information and communication technologies
  • Examples of CPSs and their social impact.

Learning outcomes

After the course you will be able to

  • understand what cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are
  • define uncertainty, information, network, decision-making and action as concepts
  • analyse CPSs as constituted by three necessary layers with three cross-layer operations
  • indicate enabling technologies of CPSs
  • design and assess the performance of simple CPSs, as well as critically discuss their social impact.

Course materials

Textbook, simulations in python produced by the teachers and other suggested materials.

Literature: Nardelli, Pedro HJ. Cyber-physical Systems: Theory, Methodology, and Applications. John Wiley & Sons, 2022. Available at LUT Primo.
