Wood products and processes

Individual course

Max amount of FITech students: 200

Persons without a valid study right at a Finnish university or university of applied sciences have preference to this course.

The course presents the most relevant wood-based products, their production processes, properties and typical applications.

Course contents

This course presents the production processes and structures of widely used engineered wood products, such as plywood, cross-laminated timber, and other timber and panel products. Links between wood product properties and typical applications in the living environment are presented. The course also covers wood modification methods which affect the durability of wood.

Learning outcomes

After the course, students

  • are familiar with the most common wood adhesive systems, their properties and application in wood products
  • are able to list the most common wood products, their setup and application range
  • know the whole production processes of selected wood products, such as plywood, cross-laminated timber, particleboards, fiberboards and modified wood products starting from raw material to the end product
  • know the impact of certain key process parameters and their effect on the performance of the products respectively
  • are able to describe how wood material properties (such as grain orientation and knots) influence the processing of wood into different products
  • are familiar with wood degradation mechanisms and preservation/modification methods to enhance the durability of wood.
