Characterization of energy materials

Please note that the applications will not be processed between 15.6.-15.8. and the course will not be evaluated between 1.6.–31.7.

In the course, students learn about different characterization methods usable for energy materials. These concern the study of mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic and thermal properties of materials.

Course content

• Characterization techniques for surfaces and thin films (surface –IR, ATR-FTIR, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, SERS, ellipsometry)
• Imaging techniques like AFM, SEM and TEM
• Techniques for determining the size of nanoparticles and macromolecules (light scattering, ultracentrifugation, electrophoresis, and viscosity measurements) basics in electrochemical characterization.
• Thermal analysis.

Learning outcomes

After the course, students will have acquired tools to enable the choice of appropriate characterization methods for specific material characterization needs as well as to critically evaluate the obtained results.

Completion methods

• This course doesn’t have a fixed schedule and it can be studied at your own pace.
• Completion by writing a learning diary, presumed student’s workload for independent studying approx. 135 h (5 x 27 h).
• The material is available online in Moodle.
