This course gives you an overview of how different pictures and symbols can be used for communication.

Course contents

The thematic module introduces the student to aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) techniques such as the use of pictures or symbols. Lectures focus on strategies (such as PECS, first-then boards) and the use of different systems (such as ARASAAC, Mulberry or Sclera) in different situations. Technologies, culture and the environment are also briefly discussed.

Learning outcomes

After completing the module, the student is able to produce basic communication with images or symbols and is able to name different strategies understanding different use cases. The student is also able to describe the difference between AAC systems.

Completion methods

Independent assignments and final essay. The course can be completed at your own pace.
