This course will provide you information how touch can be used for communication.

Course contents

The course gives an overview of social-haptic communication as a communication approach for people with sensory loss (visual impaired, hearing impaired, dual sensory impaired) and other client groups (with dementia, learning difficulties etc.).

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will

  • know the most important concepts related to social-haptic communication.
  • understand the basics of producing and receiving touch messages.
  • explore how haptic exploration can be expressed by other senses.
  • share future development possibilities, e.g. touch messages received by smart clothes.
  • know the basic principles of visuals-to-text translation.

Completion methods

Independent assignments and final essay. The course can be completed at your own pace.
