Water services in urban settings

Individual course

Max amount of FITech students: 30 adult learners

Persons without a valid study right at a Finnish university or university of applied sciences have preference to this course.

Water services in urban settings course recognises the characteristics and value of water services for society now and in the development of urban societies. The cource focuses among other things the present and future key challenges of water services including customer oriented water services, renovation dept and access management and global climate change.

Course contents

Seven one-week sections:

  1. Sustainable water services and resilient organisations
  2. Crises in urban water services – Case Cape Town
  3. Water family (This week we will examine the water supply and sewerage from the point of view “of the whole world”)
  4. Early cultures
  5. Wastewater
  6. Remunicipalisation of water supply and sewerage (WSS)
  7. Summary

Learning outcomes

After the course, the students

  • can identify more concrete needs for water services (for people, business and the society)
  • can recognise the characteristics and value of water services for society now and in the development of urban societies
  • can describe the importance of water services for the society, the societal aims, which affect the water services, and the core issues and actions related to water services policy
  • can describe water supply and sanitation service chain and its´ technical parts and operation starting from raw water intake and ending with waste water treatment
  • can acknowledge the effects of water services, the environment and safety, and the goal of sustainable water services system in human rights, ecological, economic and social terms
  • know long term development and can recognise the present and future key challenges of water services including customer oriented water services, renovation dept and access management, global climate change and circulation economy
  • can describe the water services and key challenges in global scope and reflect Finnish water services in the international level.

Course material

All material is distributed on the Moodle platform.

Teaching schedule

  • Each of the seven course sections include a variable number of small assignments.
  • A new section will start on Monday morning, at the latest, and all assignments are to be completed no later than 23.59 hours local time on Sunday.
  • Note that you have to do all assignments and tasks to pass this course.

Completion methods

  • Weekly assignments and tasks.
  • Written essay and cross-reading (introducing one water utility).
